Plant-based options in our schools

This campaign was raised by a member to lobby for more plant-based options in our borough's schools. More plant-based options would help the climate, children’s health and save the council money!

Progress so far:

  • The steering team have met with ProVeg and attended a talk by Animal Rebellion

    • ProVeg run a programme called School Plates, which aims to deliver menu change across UK schools in order to improve the health of our children and the planet.

    • They offer a range of services – all free of charge – aimed at increasing the uptake of existing vegetarian meals and increasing the quantity and quality of plant-based food.

    • They work mostly with local authorities’ catering teams that are responsible for the food in multiple schools.

    • They add new meat-free days, usually themed as planet-friendly days, and increase the variety and diversity of schools’ existing vegetarian and vegan food with new meal and recipe suggestions.

  • We have also had great engagement with Croydon Council so far.

Next steps:

  • We want to meet with the School Food & Physical Activity Officer at the Council to understand what the current school menus are like and we can support the transition.

  • We also will launch a petition which we hope will gain at least 1,000 signatures to show the Council that residents support this idea.
